HCA Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE:HCA), one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers, today announced that Virginia Tenpenny has been named vice president of community engagement, effective January 12, 2026.

In this role, Tenpenny will lead HCA Healthcare’s community engagement strategy, overseeing a team that manages social and charitable investments, colleague giving and volunteering, community outreach and strategic partnerships.

“Virginia is a nationally recognized leader in community impact, corporate philanthropy and stakeholder engagement,” said Deb Reiner, senior vice president of marketing and corporate affairs for HCA Healthcare. “We are excited to welcome her to HCA Healthcare and are confident her leadership will help us continue to strengthen nonprofit partnerships and create meaningful impact in the communities we serve.”

Tenpenny joins HCA Healthcare with more than two decades of experience in corporate community impact. Most recently, she served as chief social impact officer at NationSwell, where she led a national community of senior corporate, philanthropic and nonprofit leaders working to accelerate innovative solutions to social, economic and environmental challenges. Prior to that, Tenpenny spent 16 years at Starbucks Coffee Company in executive roles across public affairs and served as the company’s first chief global social impact officer.

Tenpenny serves on the board of directors of USA for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and on the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. She is also a member of the Leadership Nashville Class of 2026. She is a graduate of the University of Colorado.

Tenpenny succeeds Joanne Pulles, who is retiring after 26 years with HCA Healthcare. During this time, Pulles also served as president of the HCA Healthcare Foundation where she managed over $200 million in assets and guided grant making to over 300 organizations each year. In 2005, she helped establish and was founding president of the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund, a 501(c)(3) public charity that provides emergency funds to colleagues when significant hardships arise, which has now provided nearly $120 million in assistance.

“Joanne’s vision and leadership have transformed how HCA Healthcare connects with and supports our communities,” said Reiner. “Her unwavering commitment to service has left an enduring mark on our organization, and her legacy will continue to inspire us. We wish her well in retirement.”
